Mitte

This is the central district of Berlin and therefore one of the most popular destinations for tourists to the city, both as a place to visit and a place to stay. This is one of the two boroughs, alongside Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, that contains areas formerly in both West and East Germany. Mitte contains the historic centre of Berlin and many of its most famous attractions. This historic core was, between 1961 and 1990, in East Germany and was surrounded by the Berlin wall to its north, west and south. The famous Checkpoint Charlie was a border control point, operated by the US army and allies, between Kreuzberg and Mitte through which foreigners and diplomats could pass. It is now one of Berlin’s main historic attractions. While German’s talking about Mitte usually refer only to the former East German centre, the borough now encompasses a larger area including several areas that were in West Germany.

As the core of modern day unified Berlin, there is of course much to see and do in this borough, which really is at the heart of the action. Some of the many attractions to be found here are: The Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Unter den Linden, Potsdamer Platz, the Reichttag, Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin Cathedral, Alexander Platz and the Fernsehturm, Germany’s highest building. This is the tourist centre of the city to be warned that prices may be higher, but there is nowhere better to stay if you want easy access to all the main sights.
